About Me

Welcome to The Third Grade Learning Spot!
I'm Renée, the face behind this blog.

Growing up I always wanted to be a teacher. I obtained a BA in English and teaching certificates in Elementary Education K-8 and English K-12 in 1996. As a student teacher I taught English to freshman, junior, and senior high schoolers. During my teaching career I've taught pre-k through 8th grade in both public and private schools, including 8 years as a kindergarten teacher. In 2013, I began a new educational journey teaching 3rd grade and love it! My teaching philosophy is that students learn best by doing. With that in mind, I strive to create learning activities that are engaging, challenging, hands-on, and FUN.

When I'm not teaching, I tutor, blog, and design lessons for Teachers Pay Teachers. I've also been featured in teaching publications such as The Mailbox Magazine and Scholastic. You can check out one of lessons showing how to integrate art with the content areas at Scholastic.com  . In my free time, I love to travel with my camera. I've been lucky enough to visit the entire East Coast, Vermont, Louisiana, California, Canada, Mexico, Jamaica, Cayman Islands, Bahamas, England, Ireland, and Scotland. I also love reading, crafting, swimming, going to the beach, movies, and museums.

I created my blog to document my teaching experiences, enable my students and their families to see our learning adventures, and collaborate with other educators. I hope you find ideas and inspiration here!

  1. Hello Renee! I too want to start my own blog but have no clue as to where to begin. Are there any things or websites that I could look into in order to begin?

  2. Two free hosting sites are WordPress and Blogger. I use Blogger because I find it easy to use and it offers templates in case you don't want to use a blog designer or purchase graphics. I also recommend checking out as many blogs as you can to get ideas and get a feel of what you want your own blog to be like.
