Ringing in 2018

Our class has been ringing in 2018 with many new learning topics and activities. In math, we began our division unit by meeting Division Man, who introduced us to the steps of dividing...

Students then made "Pizza, Pizza, Division" booklets to learn that division means breaking apart a number, the division symbols, and practice solving division word problems...
In science, we've begun our Rocks, Soil, and Fossils Earth Science unit. A "Rock Museum" in the "Science Spot" contains posters, books, and rock samples for students to explore...
Students learned that rocks are classified as igneous, metamorphic, or sedimentary by creating "Types of Rocks" flipbooks and watching a Brainpop video about the rock types. Then, we examined rock samples and classified them as one of them...
Next, we'll be learning about the three types of soil: clay, loam and humus as well as learning about fossils, including examining/identifying real fossil samples.

In writing, we celebrated the end of our Patricia Polacco Author Study by sharing our "A Family Tradition" personal narratives with first grade partners while enjoying cookies...
In reading, we've been using our Charlotte's Web "lapbooks" to explore the themes of the novel and build our reading comprehension skills via graphic organizers, comprehension questions, and reader responses. We've also been busy learning about our government at the state and national level in social studies. Lessons included learning about landmarks of Washington DC, the pros/cons of DC becoming our capitol, and the 3 Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches of our government via read-alouds, videos, and a "Branches of Government" flipbook.

Wishing everyone a healthy and happy new year!
