Rockin' Science and More

3rd graders have become skilled geologists learning about the earth's surface. We started our unit reading books and watching videos about rocks and minerals, then recorded facts we learned on circle maps...

Next, the students created "Types of Rocks" flipbooks. Each book flap contains an illustration, definition, features, and examples of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks.  During a rock classification activity students had a tasty time deciding which type of rock cookies and candy represented. Upon completing their field notes they quickly devoured their samples!

A highlight of the unit has been visiting the classroom "Rock Museum". It contains books about rocks, minerals, and fossils as well as a variety of rock samples students have been excited to examine and try to identify using identification books and charts...

In math we've been busy practicing how to divide in a variety of hands-on ways, including working in teams to create division board games. The teams then rotated around the room playing each division game and recording how they solved problems...

    Happy learning!
