Mapping Skills

The theme of our 3rd grade social studies curriculum is "Communities" and part of that includes mapping skills. Classmates demonstrated their mapping knowledge by collaborating to create a 3D community bulletin board.

The 1st step was coming up with the community title, "Shalom Town". Next, we created a bubble map of things to include in our community such as businesses and landforms. Students voted on names for streets and landmarks. Then, each 3rd grader designed a 3D business or house using templates. We also made a map key and compass rose. Here's our cartographers hard at work and the final results...

As an extension activity, students will design their own communities and make construction paper maps of them at home.

          Happy learning!
