Geometry Going Ons

There's been lots of geometry going ons the past few weeks in class. We started the unit learning about different types of lines and angles, including a hands-on activity where students used toothpicks, circle stickers, and markers to represent lines and angles with points and rays...

Next, we moved on to learning about polygons and quadrilaterals. Students created their own polygon charts to draw and record information about several types of polygons, including whether or not they are quadrilaterals...

The class learned about 4 types of triangles by creating "Types of Triangles" flip books and matching triangles to their names on the Smartboard...

Then, we moved on to learn about perimeter and area. One learning activity involved measuring class objects to discover their perimeter and area. Another activity involved partners working together to discover the perimeter and area of shapes on grid paper, solve word problems comparing the shapes' measurements, and use specific measurements to draw shapes...

Our favorite perimeter and area activity was DEFINITELY creating "Area and Perimeter Robots". Teams were challenged to create a robot for NASA that could successfully land on Mars and send information back to Earth only if student designers followed specific perimeter and area measurements. Robots featured antennas, magnet and shovel feet, and clawed hands to pick up Mars sand. One robot even resembled Batman!
It was so fun that even  Mrs. Green got in on the action!
The robot below is the twin of the Caped Crusader, Batman...
Here's the final results in the front hallway of school...
