2021-2022 First Week Fun

Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year in The Third Grade Learning Spot! The first week may have been short, however, we still engaged in lots of activities to get to know one another, review skills learned last year, and get introduced to new concepts.

Our first day began by reading a welcome letter to learn what activities we would be doing...
Next, we had our first read aloud, First Day Jitters, after discussing what "having the jitters" means. We then read the poem "Jitter Juice" and got to drink some "jitter juice" while writing about a time we had the jitters...

We began our first math unit by reviewing place value in a variety of ways such as teams rolling dice and writing the number landed on in standard, expanded, and written form. Another way was using counters to represent the place value of numbers on a place value chart...

In science we learned how scientists use the scientific method to conduct experiments. We applied it to our first experiment called "Save Fred". Teams worked collaboratively to figure out how to save Fred the gummy worm by lifting his capsized boat (plastic cup), retrieving his life preserver (gummy ring), and getting him into it using only paperclips and no hands. Students completed a lab report that included their hypothesis, a flow chart illustrating the experiment steps, and a conclusion...

Other activities this week included beginning first social studies unit on map skills, starting our writing journals, and getting to know one another by playing "Two Truths and  Fib" when we tried guessing which statement of our classmates' was a fib.

Wishing everyone a sweet Rosh Hashana!
