Science Scoop

The students have been hard at work becoming  "Matter Mavericks" in the Third Grade Learning Spot! Our class began our physical science unit learning about the 3 states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. One way was by creating "Three States of Matter" flip books with illustrations showing how molecules are arranged in each state. Next, we learned about physical and chemical changes. We watched "Physical and Chemical Changes" on Scholastic Study Jams and took an online assessment as well as creating a physical and chemical change classification chart. The class conducted a "Magic Milk" experiment to create a chemical change. First, we added a few drops of different colored food coloring to a bowl of milk and observed the food coloring remained still...

Next, we added a few drop of dish detergent to the bowl...and became excited when we saw a chemical change occurring that caused the drops of food coloring to swirl together!

Based on our scientific observations we concluded that the drops of fat in the milk tried to join with the dish detergent creating the chemical change, which we could observe by the liquid swirling around the bowl. Students then wrote an experiment report using the scientific method.

     Happy learning!
