Turkey Talk 2014

Our November social studies unit was about Thanksgiving, including learning about the Pilgrims of Plimoth Colony and the Wampanoag Indians who taught them many helpful things to survive in the New World. Thanksgiving themed books were read aloud and added to the classroom library center, including The First Thanksgiving, On the Mayflower, Sarah Morton's Day, and Thanksgiving on Plymouth Plantation. Our social studies theme was also incorporated with other subjects, such as making multiplication turkeys to demonstrate students' knowledge of the times tables...

I had the opportunity to visit Plimoth Plantation in Massachuttes a few years ago and was able to share Native American crafts with the class, including a miniture canoe made of bark and decorated with quills, music instruments, and jewelry made out of leather, beads, and quills.

We also had a chance to check out Native American objects when we visited the 5th grade's "Native American Museum". The 5th graders were great museum docents and taught the 3rd graders about a variety of tribes' housing, snake mounds, hunting tools, and other objects they created...

                      Love the pipecleaner "corn" below...

The voyage on the Mayflower and life in Plimoth Colony and the Wampanoag Village came alive for us when we took a virtual field trip to Plimoth Plantation using the Science Lab Smartboard...

Students recorded what they learned about each on recording sheets...

The Plimoth Plantation Virtual Field Trip Recording Sheet can be downloaded for free at my TPT store.
