Digging into the Earth's Surface and Division

We've been beating the winter blues engaging in hands-on learning activities this month.

In science we're continuing our earth science unit learning about the earth's surface. After reading about weathering, erosion, and deposition we sang and acted out "Break, Move, Drop"
The students then classified natural event riddles as weathering, erosion, or deposition on a chart...
Now we've begun learning about the 3 types of rocks: igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary. Students created flip books to define each as well as learning what minerals, geodes, and gemstones are. So far our class "Rock Museum" has been the biggest hit of the unit...

Next week we'll be classifying cookies and candybars as one of the 3 types of rocks...and eating them of course! Then, we'll be moving on to learning about the 3 types of soil...and getting down and dirty examining soil samples to learn about its layers and comparing clay, humus, and loam.

Our new math unit is division. The class was introduced to Division Man to learn the steps of dividing...

After creating mini "Pizza, Pizza, Division" books to learn how division is splitting a number into equal groups the students used M&M's and math mats to solve division problems.

We'll be continuing to practice dividing using a variety of manipulatives and games such as "Division Dunk" and then begin learning how to divide with remainders.

  Happy learning!
